Zamindars often received support because peasants thought them as their immediate leader…
Although we have seen after 18th century, maximum revolts were happened w/t the support of Zamindars and often against Zamindars, reason being they became too exploitative and didn’t pay heed to the poor peasantry. They only became concerned to take maximum revenue from peasantry.
One more thing I want to clarify is unlike what was thought was British while introducing the Zamindari System, Zamindars did not invest for the betterment of land…
And, it created landed aristocracy for the first time in India unlike the Mughal Period (17th cent.)
Land assessment was not done properly and land revenue was fixed arbitrarily unlike what we see in Mughal period of land assessment.
