Chandragupta I, who ruled from around 320 to 335 CE, was the first Gupta ruler to assume the title of Maharajadhiraja, which means “king of kings”. This title was a significant departure from the earlier Gupta rulers, who had used the title of Maharaja or “great king”. The adoption of the title of Maharajadhiraja was a reflection of the expanding political and military power of the Gupta Empire under Chandragupta I. His reign is also significant because he was the first Gupta ruler to establish matrimonial alliances with other royal families, which helped to strengthen the Gupta Empire.
